Nexium (also known by its generic name esomeprazole) is a prescription medicine used to treat stomach ulcers caused by certain stomach disorders. It is typically used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is also known as heartburn. The drug helps by decreasing the amount of acid in the stomach and, in some cases, relieving symptoms such as stomach pain, acid reflux and heartburn. It is also used to treat heartburn that occurs during the early stages of the healing process.
It works by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach that causes the ulcer to heal. This makes the treatment of GERD easier.
The drug may be taken with or without food.
